ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Col. George G. Akin, former commander, 404th Army Field Support Brigade, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington, received decorations and gratitude, as family, friends and co-workers gathered at Rock Island Arsenal’s Constitution Square to celebrate his retirement, June 30.
Maj. Gen. Yves J. Fontaine, commanding general of the U.S. Army Sustainment Command, hosted the ceremony and extended his personal appreciation and admiration.
“We’re here today, not to say goodbye, but to bid farewell and good luck to Greg Akin, someone who has been one of my Airborne Buddies - in the 1st Corps Support Command in Iraq, at the 21st Theater Sustainment Command in Germany, and now here at ASC,” said Fontaine. “You are moving on to another chapter of your life, and I will miss you, my friend.”
With 27 years of military service, Akin has received numerous awards and decorations and has traveled the globe for his Nation.
“No matter which location or what the experience, either peace or war, the Army team has always had my back,” said Akin. “It has provided me the honor to work with our Nation’s best - our Soldiers.”
Fontaine reflected on shared memories and wished the Akin family well in retirement. “As you begin a new chapter in your life in Korea with your lovely wife, know that you had a special part in making the Army better and the success it is today,” said Fontaine. “I wish you the best as you continue to support your wife and our Army’s Soldiers and families in your new role.”
