On June 17, the U.S. Army Garrison at Fort McPherson and Fort Gillem cased its colors, a significant event in the installations upcoming closure due to BRAC Sept. 15. Just as the Garrison saw a milestone then, today the Sentinel experiences a major milestone.

Although a military newspaper, the actual publishing is done by a civilian press agency, the Clayton News Daily. The agency and the Garrison form a contract to provide the weekly paper for the community. That contract ends this month, and due to the limited amount of time left until BRAC, will not be renewed.

Thus, this issue will be the last hard copy issue produced. While the paper will still be produced electronically, the last physical copy is a big deal.

For this last edition, besides providing the normal news from around Fort McPherson and Fort Gillem in the last week, I also wanted to provide a glimpse into the past.

Just as the paper is changing, I wanted to show some of the changes the installations went through, give some background on the beginning of Fort McPherson, and provide information on the men for whom Fort McPherson and Fort Gillem are named.

I hope you enjoy this final paper issue. I want to thank all my coworkers who helped make this possible, as well as all the individuals who submitted work to me in the past. Your help was greatly appreciated. And most importantly, I want to thank all the readers for all the support they’ve provided by reading prior issues.

Enjoy this final issue!
