Community celebrates troops with Military Appreciation Day

MONTEREY, Calif. - Service members and their families were treated to Military Appreciation Day at Del Monte Shopping Center June 4. In addition to discounts from mall merchants, attendees were treated to free coffee, donuts, hot dogs and other refreshments.
The Operation Care and Comfort “Yellow Ribbon” team was there offering spectators and shoppers the opportunity to sign a card to deployed service members and show their support for the troops.
Entertainment included the Seaside JROTC Drill and March Team, the Swingin’ Blue Stars of the USS Hornet, and the United States Air Force Choir from the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center.
Additionally, a “meet the astronaut” photo opportunity with Astronaut Dan Bursch from the Naval Postgraduate School completed the entertainment program.
Monterey Mayor Chuck Della Sala feted the military with a proclamation that recognized the sacrifices by the Armed Forces and family members who have done so much to “preserve the liberties that have enriched this nation making it unique in the world community.”
Representing the military were Col. Danial Pick, commandant of DLIFLC; Navy Capt. Jim Pettigrew, Fleet Numerical commanding officer; and Coast Guard Lt. John Suckow, U.S. Coast Guard Station Monterey.
