FORT GEORGE G. MEADE, Md. (June 17, 2011) -- Implementation of the BRAC 2005 process reached a major milestone this week with the completion of the headquarters buildings for the Defense Media Activity and Co-location of Defense and Military Adjudications Activities.

Employees for both agencies began relocating to the new buildings in June and will continue through August at a rate of 200 per month for DMA and 250 per month for Adjudication.

Doug Burk, Deputy Garrison Commander for Transformation, welcomed the new tenant partnerships that have moved to Fort Meade as a result of BRAC.

“Based on the 2005 BRAC announcements, FGGM personnel have worked thousands of hours in supporting congressionally mandated BRAC growth. With the final completion of our BRAC construction projects, Team Meade is excited about our new tenant partnerships and the opportunity to support new missions.”

Burk stressed that despite growth, Fort Meade will maintain its reputation as a great place to live and work.

“We welcome our new neighbors and will continue to focus on mission readiness. Although the population continues to grow, our goals have not changed. Team Meade will continue its commitment in ensuring the entire FGGM community is provided world class installation services.”

Construction for The Defense Media Activity headquarters building, a 176,000-square-foot facility, started in April 2009. The DMA consolidates the Soldiers Media Center, Naval Media Center, Marine Corps News, Air Force News Service and American Forces Information Service into a single field activity. The Defense Information School, on Fort Meade is a subordinate unit of DMA. DINFOS trains military students in photojournalism, graphic design, public affairs and broadcasting.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the Co-location of Defense and Military Adjudication Activities building took place in March 2009. Construction of this almost 152,000 square-foot facility was completed ahead of schedule, allowing plenty of time for employee relocations to take place.

The Co-location of Defense and Military Adjudication Activities combines 10 government agencies that adjudicate, or determine security clearances for DoD and other federal employees.

DISA, the largest of the three BRAC agencies which moved to Fort Meade, held its ribbon cutting ceremony on May 24.

Congress set a September 2011 deadline for all BRAC projects to be complete and buildings occupied.

Once the moves are complete, the 2005 BRAC action will bring 5,700 new employees, both military and civilian to Fort Meade.
