Spartan Soldiers gear up for summer safety

FORT STEWART, Ga. - It is the summer season in Georgia, and the weather is warming up.

Although they are not in Army Combat Uniforms and tan boots, it is the weekend - and they are at Tybee Island enjoying the beach - the standard is still there.

No one is drinking then jumping into the ocean. There is plenty of water to drink to prevent dehydration from the summer sun, and sunscreen is applied to all these Soldiers.

They are practicing safety, instilled by their leaders, and still having a great time.

As the weather at Fort Stewart, Georgia begins to warm up, 2nd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division Soldiers have been reiterating taking proper precautions while having

fun in the sun.

Private First Class Joshua Burk, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2HBCT, said though he looks forward to having loads of fun on his down time, he knows to be safe.

“There are so many things to do in this area during the summer since we are located off the coast. You have swimming, fishing, water skiing, just to name a few,” Pfc. Burk said. “Even

though I can’t wait to relax with some of my battle buddies outside of work in this nice weather my noncommissioned officers and leaders have drilled into us the importance of being safe at

all costs.”

The 1/64th Armored Regiment, 2 HBCT commander, Lt. Col. Charles Armstrong said all Spartan Soldiers must keep safety in their uppermost mind- in and outside the uniform.

“It’s definitely important for Soldiers to always think about being safe. We do not need a bunch of Soldiers injured because of carelessness,” Lt. Col. Armstrong said. “It goes back to an old

saying: ‘Knowing is half the battle.’ As long as we, as leaders, work hard to keep Soldiers informed on how important it is for them to be safe, they will automatically become aware.”

Lieutenant Colonel Armstrong also said he and other leaders think it is an excellent idea for Soldiers to have fun in the weather because even though they are having fun, in a sense it is also preparing them for training and the mission.

“Having Soldiers go fishing or swimming in the heat is definitely a good idea, because their bodies become accustomed to the weather; when we are training, they will have adapted to

it,” he said. “However, they know to drink plenty of water, not to include alcohol in unsafe recreational activities, and to use sunscreen lotion as needed.”
