Operation Homefront delivers smiles, advice to expecting mothers

FORT STEWART, Ga. - Fifty military affiliated expecting women received free diapers, baby blankets, prizes and more at a patriotic themed baby shower, May 19 at the Liberty County YMCA.

Like most showers, ‘mothers-to-be’ participated in nursery rhyme and interactive games, but more importantly they had time to fellowship with each other.

“We are having a mass baby shower for 50 women and their friends so we can give them a day of fun and activities and some nice giveaways that are provided from in-kind gifts,” said Christina Anthony, Family services director for Operation Homefront.

“I’m expecting my first child and was unsure if I could have a baby shower because my husband might get deployed soon,” said Pfc. Cassie Voshell, 24th Ordnance Battalion. “So I decided to have my shower this way and have fun.”

With a packed agenda that included games like ‘pass the stinky diaper,’ expecting mothers could laugh, relax and connect with each other.

“My baby is due next Friday and it was important for me to come out for socialization… because we are new here and I don’t know anyone,” said Family Member Laurie Barnard. “My advice for new moms is to take it one day at a time.”

“I knew that it would be a good experience to get out and talk with other mothers and get advice,” said Cpl. Catherine Jones, 385th Military Police Battalion. “Although I’m nervous and excited, having a baby is a gift.”

According to Christina Anthony, the primary mission of Operation Homefront is to provide programs, like the shower, to help Families of service members and wounded warriors.

“The purpose of Operation Homefront is to help service men and women of the military and their dependents while their spouses are deployed, wounded warriors, and those left behind or in a financial struggle,” Anthony said.

“Events like this offer a tremendous morale booster… This year alone we have provided nine programs that directly supported more than 10,000 Families.”

“I’ve participated in several programs offered by Operation Homefront,” said mother of four and Family Member Susan Arnold. “My advice for expecting mothers would be to take a break and remember what is important.”

Working with Operation Homefront is both personal and rewarding for Christina Anthony.

“I’ve been a military brat, dependent, Soldier, veteran and spouse and I always think of what can we provide to Soldiers and their Families to help them,” Anthony said. “We had an incredible response for this event.”
