FORT McCOY, Wis. -- People in the Fort McCoy community received the latest information about health, wellness and a variety of commercial and nonprofit vendors/organizations in the area during the annual Health and Wellness Fair May 11 at Fort McCoy.

A number of physical events and interactive booth exhibits/displays and information supported the theme “Forever Fit.”

An American Red Cross blood drive began the day’s activities. A 5-K run and 2-mile fun walk followed and attracted about 170 participants. Approximately 100 people walked the course while 68 participated in the run, said Pam Budda, Fort McCoy Outdoor Recreation Manager.

Participants also competed in several basketball events, including a free-throw, three-point shooting and hotshots competition. A martial arts demonstration was new this year.

Jobi Spolum, Fort McCoy Marketing director, said a number of installation organizations had information about their activities available. Many businesses, who participated in the event under the commercial sponsorship program, also provided informational booths at the event. The sponsorships helped the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (DFMWR) provide door prizes for the event, and many of the businesses also had door prizes available at their booths, she said.

The event helped support the Army Community Covenant by providing services to members of the entire Fort McCoy community, including military and civilian personnel, their Family members and retirees, Spolum said.

Spolum added the commercial booths also allowed people in the Fort McCoy community to see what services and products are available in the local communities.

Master Sgt. Loren Sikkink of the Army Reserve Careers Division of the mobilization support staff said it was great to have all the information in one place. He particularly wanted to get information about the recreational activities available at Fort McCoy.

Jenna Spata of the 181st Infantry Brigade brought along her 3-year-old daughter to participate in the walk.

Spata pushed her daughter in a stroller for part of the route, and her daughter also walked part of the way. The health information also was good to review, Spata said.

Linda Alt of the Civilian Personnel Advisory Center said she came with several people from her office and arrived in time to cheer the people completing the races.

Her group was excited to come to the event and see the commercial booths and the information available.

“We saw several new booths,” Alt said." We also had a chance to take advantage of introductory offers from some of the businesses.

Capt. Ray McAllister of Regional Training Center-Central said he liked checking out the health information as well as the other booths.

“They had good college information, you can check out the vendors to see what commercial products and services are available in the area, and I did all the available health checks,” McAllister said. “It was a great event.”
