COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Army News Service, May 23, 2011) -- After an intense match against the Marines, the Army brought home the silver medal in Sitting Volleyball at the Olympic Training Center Saturday.
The match was attended by fans from across the services, decked out in face paint and waving signs. But despite the fan support, the Army team came up short, 2-0.
Sgt. Robbie Gaupp thought the Army played well despite the loss.
"I know we left everything we had on the court, the other team just played better," Gaupp said. "They brought it."
The teams played each other for the best two out of three games.
The Marines reached 25 points during the second match, making a third match unnecessary.
Gaupp said he feels he did his best during the match, supporting his team to the best of his ability. He would like to come back next year and play as well. "If I am invited I'll definitely be here to play this sport, basketball and track."
Gaupp, who won bronze in the 100-meter dash open, and shared the silver for the final relay with his teammates, shattered his right shoulder in 2008 while conducting a joint operations mission with the Border Patrol.
The volleyball match ended with the Marine fans chanting "Good game, Army," and the teams shaking hands, a fitting way to close the last event of the 2011 Warrior Games.
"Of course, I'd rather have the gold, but the silver is fine," Gaupp said with a smile. "It'll look nice on my wall."
In the bronze medal match, the Special Operations team defeated the Navy 2-1.
