FORT McCOY, Wis. -- Soldiers in a Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) training course at Regional Training Site (RTS)-Maintenance at Fort McCoy learned procedures to survive in a CBRN environment and how to serve as a training resource for their organization.
Sgt. 1st Class James Pratt, 3rd Battalion, 104th Regiment, 3rd Brigade (CM) senior instructor, said the two-week course expands on information Soldiers learn during basic training or advanced individual training, but does not lead to military occupational specialty qualification. Those completing the course can act as their unit’s chemical officer or noncommissioned officer, he said.
“The person who goes through this training can help ensure Army standards are met, such as meeting the JSLIST (Joint Service Lightweight Integrated Suit Technology) standards to wear their MOPP (mission-oriented, protective-posture) gear,” Pratt said.
The knowledge is especially valuable for Soldiers facing deployment, he said. In addition to basic information about CBRN, the course teaches how to change MOPP gear and survive in a contaminated environment.
1st Lt. Richard Branson of the Missouri Army National Guard, a recent student in the class, said the information and handouts will reinforce the CBRN tasks and the training will be incorporated into teaching unit Soldiers common or warrior task training.
“This situation could happen to us at any time,” Branson said. “It’s good to know the safe, emergency actions to take.”
