Maj. Gen. Perry Wiggins selected to command First Army Division West at Fort Hood

FORT SAM HOUSTON, TEXAS - Maj. Gen. Perry L. Wiggins, the deputy commanding general of United States Army North (Fifth Army) at Fort Sam Houston, has been selected for assignment as the commanding general of First Army Division West at Fort Hood. The announcement was made official today in a press release from the Office of the Secretary of Defense (http://www.defense.gov/releases/release.aspx'releaseid=14429).

Wiggins has been assigned to his current position since April 27, 2009.

As the deputy commanding general, Wiggins was second in command at Army North. His focus areas included: training and readiness, major training exercise synchronization, and national Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Consequence Management Response Forces' readiness.

Wiggins lived in a number of locations throughout the world but considers Warner Robins, Georgia, as home. He earned his commission as an Infantry Lieutenant from Mercer University in 1983. He has served with the Army throughout the United States, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East. His operational tours have included key command assignments during operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm; Joint Guardian in Kosovo; and operation Iraqi Freedom.

After serving on the Joint Staff in the Pentagon, he served as the assistant division commander for maneuver with the 1st Infantry Division and later assumed duties as the acting commander of the 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley.

Wiggins is a graduate of the Infantry Officer Basic Course, Aviation Officer Advanced Course, Command and General Staff College, and the United States Army War College, where he earned a Master of Arts in Strategic Studies.

His replacement has not yet been named.
