FORT BRAGG, N.C. - Most Families would spend a sunny North Carolina Saturday outside enjoying the great weather.
On March 19, several Families of the 16th Military Police Brigade, however, decided instead to lose some hair at Fayetteville's Mash House to raise money for childhood cancer research.
Soldiers and Families of the 16th Military Police Brigade recently raised over $600 for the St. Baldrick's Foundation, the second biggest funder of childhood cancer research after the United States government.
Volunteers of the foundation support childhood cancer research by shaving their heads after collecting monetary donations.
The event was hosted by Kathleen Henry, whose two sons have cancer. Kathleen is married to Sergeant First Class Robert Henry, who has served several years in different companies of the Fort Bragg based 503rd Military Police Battalion, 16th Military Police Brigade.
"People should always give more then they receive," said 1st Sgt. Joe Bayne, the first sergeant of Headquarters, Headquarters Company, 16th Military Police Brigade. Bayne went on to say he admired those who were brave enough to have their heads shaved to help out the Henry Family.
The Mash House and the Paul Mitchell Beauty School teamed up to sponsor the event. Stylists from the beauty school shaved the heads of the brave and also provided haircuts to those less daring.
Those with hair long enough were given the opportunity to donate their hair to Locks of Love, an organization which provides hairpieces to children suffering long term, medical hair loss.
By the end of the event, 20 adults and children sat in the barber's chair to support childhood cancer research.
