ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - The Army Sustainment Command Equal Opportunity Office hosted a Women's History Month observance, March 17 at the Rock Island Arsenal Golf Course clubhouse.

The observance began with a video presentation highlighting the achievements women have made throughout history. The keynote speaker of the event was ASC's Sgt. Maj. Debra Buie.

"We celebrate Women's History Month not just for the female Soldiers and Department of the Army civilians in our ranks, but for all the women around the world, past, present and future," said Buie.

The theme for this year's Women's History Month is "Our history is our strength." Women's History Month first began as "Women's History Week," the week containing March 8 which is International Women's Day. The celebration later expanded in 1987 when the National Women's History Project petitioned Congress to make the celebration the entire month of March.

"We celebrate Women's History month for the women in Haiti and Japan who have had disasters ravage their countries, but yet they fight their way through," said Buie. "We celebrate for the women of Afghanistan, Iraq, Egypt and many countries like those, because it wasn't too long ago that women in America where fighting the same battles."

Buie said that through the years women have changed popular perceptions of their potential forging the way for women in today's culture who are the ones to write the next chapter in history.

The observance ended with a poem read by Staff Sgt. Philippia Wilcher and a presentation of a plaque to Buie in honor of her contribution in women's history as the first female ASC Operations Sergeant Major.

"It is truly an honor to be a woman in the military and in the world," Buie said.
