The 27th Annual Army Family Action Plan Conference took place in Washington, D.C. Jan. 31-Feb.4 and was hosted by the Department of the Army Headquarters staff. Nine working groups consisting of Soldiers, DA civilians and family members, including teen panels, throughout the Army represented their respective communities and reviewed more than 100 issues.
Workgroups were empowered to prioritize the issues based on what impacts the global Army family, and the top two were briefed Feb. 4 to the chief of staff of the Army, sergeant major of the Army, assistant secretary of Army, and other other attending commanders. The General Officers Steering Committee meeting convened Feb. 3, chaired by Gen. Peter W. Chiarelli, vice chief of staff of the Army. GOSC members reviewed 21 active, 11 unattainable and eight completed issues before finalizing the actions. Overall, the conference was successful, and the AFAP goals and objectives were met.
The U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Forces Strategic Command sent three delegates and one facilitator to represent the command. Col. Daniel Shanahan, Command Sgt. Maj. Larry Turner, and Sgt. Maj. John Mattie also attended the conference and GOSC meeting.
