U.S. Army Garrison - Detroit Arsenal, Mich. - Brenda Lee McCullough, garrison manager for the U.S. Army's Detroit Arsenal, addressed several hundred community and business leaders from Metro Detroit and Macomb County during the Selfridge Base Community Council meeting Jan. 18.

During her presentation, McCullough explained the role the garrison plays at the Detroit Arsenal and at Selfridge Air National Guard Base and the role the arsenal plays in the Army and in Southeast Michigan. She also addressed Installation Management Command's role in managing Army installations around the world.

"It's important that these influential community leaders know what it is we do and understand how we can partner with one another to provide better services in our communities and to our Soldiers, Civilians and Family members," said McCullough. "The community council members are very much aware of what is happening at Selfridge but were not aware of the significant role the Detroit Arsenal plays in Southeast Michigan."

McCullough began her message with a short video explaining what IMCOM is and who the command serves. She also shared the six lines of effort from the IMCOM Campaign Plan with the leaders explaining that we are focused on many of the same things they are such as safety, workforce development, employee well-being, the environment, safety and operational readiness.

She explained how the garrison structure was very much like that of a local city government to which many in the crowd could relate.

The pieces that garnered the biggest reaction from the audience included the upcoming job growth at the arsenal and the amount of money that the arsenal and Army pump into the Michigan economy.

"We expect to hire an additional 1,200 employees at the Detroit Arsenal this year," said McCullough. "We have spent nearly $80 million on construction to accommodate that growth. We've also spent nearly $100 million on construction during the past two years just to maintain our missions and accommodate the growth needs of our business partners at the arsenal."

McCullough also discussed the importance of the partnership between the Detroit Arsenal and Selfridge. She explained how the arsenal's growth has spilled over to Selfridge where the Army is currently leasing space for nearly 1,000 employees. She further described the garrison's role in managing the golf course, the Patriot Pub and plans for expanding some recreation activities at the base.

Each member of the council was provided an electronic copy of the IMCOM Campaign Plan Version 2.0, the IMCOM History, the IMCOM Energy Portfolio and the U.S. Army Journal of Installation Management.
