Fort Sill, Okla.--With the new year comes a new weight loss competition for members of the Pretty Hot and Tempting or P.H.A.T. Club. The competition, which began this week, will have three teams and each team will have a trainer as team leader. The team leaders will pick the team names and the teams will be formed through Jan. 21.

P.H.A.T. Club members, who can't attend the meeting and initial assessment for the competition can still join a team by e-mailing Claudia Mejia, garrison fitness coordinator.

According to Mejia, the team leaders will also sign the teams up for the President's Challenge and log in the hours exercised and the kind of activity performed by the team members. The team that wins a medal in the President's Challenge and loses the most weight and body fat percent between January and July will win the competition and will be recognized with an award.

"Being on a team gives the team members more accountability and as part of the team, one members' lack of exercise brings down the whole team," said Mejia. "The idea is to give the team members support with personal training by the team leader.

Members can work out on their own but we are here to answer questions and offer nutritional advice, tips for healthy eating, workout routines and how many calories to eat."

The team leaders are fitness professionals, who will collect all data and input it in the system and help people to achieve their goals. The trainer is the team leader who will help them set up an individual workout routine. After the competition sign-up deadline, Mejia will start monthly weigh-ins which begin Feb. 21.

"I also plan on starting a weekly P.H.A.T. Club workout on Thursday beginning in March that will offer something different each week. We'll offer Zumba, kickboxing and a variety of other classes so the members will have a chance to experience how many different classes we offer to get fit and stay healthy," Mejia said.

"This competition is not a TV show, it's a support group. We will work out together as a team, but I recommend everyone get a workout buddy to help keep each other motivated," she said.

Members can e-mail Mejia or stop by her office at Rinehart Fitness Center, where she has an open door policy.

The P.H.A.T. Club competition currently has 130 members and Mejia hopes to get more participants before the Jan. 21 deadline. The club and competition are open to all eligible Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation patrons.

"If this competition is successful we can begin a new competition after that," she said.
