FORT JACKSON, S.C. -- Maj. Gen. John Renner, former Fort Jackson commanding general, has died. Renner served as Fort Jackson's commanding general from 1989 to 1991.

He retired in 1994 to South Carolina after 32 years of service. The infantry officer and Ranger was commissioned into the Army as a second lieutenant in 1962.

His numerous awards and decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star (with Oak Leaf Cluster), Bronze Star Medal with V Device, Purple Heart (with Oak Leaf Cluster) and the Meritorious Service Medal (with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters).
