Dan Holst, Army Sustainment Command Organizational Inspection Program coordinator, was named the Quad-City Times Opinion Letter Writer of 2010.

Dan Holst, Army Sustainment Command Organizational Inspection Program coordinator, was named the Quad-City Times Opinion Letter Writer of 2010 from a group of 1,318 submitters. Holst contributed six letters to the editor between January and October of 2010. According to the QC Times report, he provided a broad perspective of views based on his culmination of experiences as a retired Air Force NCO, Army civilian and former college student. Holst believes people should form their own opinions and convey their own voice and he likes to provide a unique perspective in his writing.

A native of the Quad City region, Holst says he came by his Midwest and conservative Christian values while growing up in the LeClaire, Iowa, area and attending the Pleasant Valley Community School District. During his worldwide military and civilian deployments, he says he has obtained a passion for tolerance of European and Middle Eastern cultures.

"It broadened my viewpoint incredibly," Holst said.

"America isn't perfect, but neither is anyone else," he said. "So look for the best from us and the best from other cultures."

According to the QC Times, Dan's letters routinely prompted Web discussions and numerous online comments. He's found that cultures and traditions vary infinitely, though people do not. "A guy in Qatar plays with his kids pretty much the same way a guy in Bettendorf does," he said.
