Command Sgt. Maj. Espinal hails from Harrison, N.J. He enlisted in the Army in August 1980 as a materiel supply specialist. He attended Basic Training at Fort Jackson, S.C., and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Lee, Va. During his career, he has served in a variety of leadership positions to include Squad Leader, Section Sergeant, Platoon Sergeant, Logistics Advisor, First Sergeant, Operations Sergeant Major, Battalion and Brigade Command Sergeant Major.

His duty assignments include PLL/TAMMS clerk and subsequently unit supply sergeant, 546th Transportation Company (LMT) Fort Bragg, N.C.; supply sergeant, D Battery, 1st Battalion, 1st Air Defense Artillery (Hawk) Hontheim, 32d Army Air Defense Command, Germany; logistics advisor, National Guard and US Army Reserves, Supply Assistant Instruction Team, U.S. Army Readiness Group, Pittsburgh, Pa.; S4 NCOIC, DISCOM, 2nd ID, Camp Casey, Korea; Regimental S4 NCOIC, Devil Brigade, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, Fort Bragg, N.C.; First Sergeant, Bravo Company, 782nd Main Support Battalion, 82nd DISCOM; Command Sergeant Major, 407th Forward Support Battalion, 82nd DISCOM, Fort Bragg, N.C.; Operations Sergeant Major, 507th Corps Support Group (A), 1st Corps Support Command, Fort Bragg, N.C.; Command Sergeant Major, Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Corps Support Command, Wiesbaden, Germany, and Operation Iraqi Freedom, Balad, Iraq; Command Sergeant Major, Sustainment Brigade (Special Operations) (Airborne), Fort Bragg, N.C. He assumed his current duty position as the Command Sergeant Major of the 1st Theater Sustainment Command in June 2008.

Espinal's awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with 4 oak leaf clusters, Army Commendation Medal with 4 oak leaf clusters, Army Achievement Medal with five oak leaf clusters, Noncommissioned Officer Ribbon with numeral 4, Army Good Conduct Medal (9th Award), Overseas Ribbon with numeral 2, Korean Service Ribbon, Global War on Terrorism Service and Expeditionary Service Ribbons, Army Humanitarian Service Ribbon; National Defense Service Ribbon and the Army Service Ribbon. Espinal is a recipient of the Distinguished Order of Saint Martin.

Espinal's military education include the Warrior Leader's Course, Basic Noncommissioned Officer Course, Advanced Noncommissioned Officer Course, First Sergeant Course, United States Army Sergeants Major Academy, Command Sergeant Major Course, Battle Staff NCO Course and Jump Master Course. His civilian education includes a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology from Fayetteville State University and a Master of Arts Degree in Acquisition and Procurement Management with a Certificate in Government Contracting from Webster University.
