FORT McCoy, Wis. -- New handicapped-accessible playground equipment at the Pine View Recreation Area may have been a long time in the works, but it will provide excellent opportunities for youth in the Fort McCoy community and visitors to Pine View, said Becky Wapp Sawyer.

Sawyer, Army Community Service director, said the project had been identified three years ago. The funding was provided by the Exceptional Family Member program.

Originally, the playground equipment was slated to be installed at South Post to support the new housing, but funding didn't arrive in time so they went ahead with other playground equipment options, Sawyer said.

The Miracle Playground Equipment Company of Hastings, Minn., installed the handicapped-accessible equipment at Pine View in early November.

The set-up includes color-coded, age-specific activities that cater to the needs of youth in the age groups of 0-2, 2-5 and 5-12, she said.

The complex will include rubber matting with the Army Family Covenant Logo interwoven in the material, she said.

Playground equipment includes the traditional fare to climb, swing and slide on, as well as some unusual items, such as simulated musical instruments, bus simulations, climbing jeep, and other items, she said.

Having the handicapped-accessible playground at Pine View will support field trips by the Child, Youth & School Services program, as well as support community and public use of the Pine View facility.

Sawyer said it is too late in the year to open the playground for use, although unexpected nice weather in early November helped move the project along toward completion.

A grand-opening ceremony will be set for the spring 2011 time frame, when the weather will be more favorable to use the equipment, she said.
