PICATINNY ARSENAL, N.J. - More than 30 vendors packed the Lindner Conference Center Oct. 6 for the installation's safety preparedness fair.
Handing out pamphlets and gadgets, each vendor had their own information to share from proper use of power tools and heavy machinery down to ensuring personal safety while engaged in physical fitness.
"The purpose of this fair is to increase the knowledge of the installation's population as to what safety measures and precautions should and can be taken in our everyday work here at the arsenal," said Scott Starns, the installation's officer for emergency management and chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and high yield explosives.
Starns said the planning process took approximately three months. Outside agencies such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and New Jersey Gas also participated.
Installation employees were also able to update their e-notify information, a system that allows users to receive telephonic alerts via text or e-mail.
"E-notify is the best mass notification system we have," Starns said. "It can be used more effectively than a pop-up notification that requires you to be in front of your computer," he said.
When used properly, both systems can notify employees of any potential hazards or necessary safety precautions. It is also used when the installation is closed or has a delayed opening due to hazardous weather conditions.
