FORT MCCOY, Wisc. -- More than 400 adults and youth attended the annual Day for Kids event at Fort McCoy Sept. 18, which featured Family, educational, and fun activities.

A number of special events attracted large crowds. About 100 people attended a presentation by Mr. Science Dr. Larry Scheckel, a retired science teacher from Tomah. The youth enjoyed learning about scientific principles through exciting, hands-on experiments, said Cori Yahnke, Child, Youth and School (CYS) Services School Age Services director.

CYS Services and Army Community Service co-sponsored the event.

"We also owe the success of the activity to the numerous teen and adult volunteers," Yahnke said.

Several installation organizations supported activities with booths, such as the Directorate of Emergency Services Child ID booth.

The booth offered Families the opportunity to create a CD that included photos, medical information, finger prints and a digital voice recording of each of their children. The CDs were given to the Families to keep in case of emergencies.

Youth also had hands-on fun at other informational booths, such as 4-H, Family Focus, Geo Trivia, Mad Libs, Financial Readiness, Internet safety and card-making for Soldiers, as well as Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) activities.

Despite the cool weather, the Kid Again Inflatable Games were busy all day. Youth had fun battling friends, parents, and their favorite CYS Services staff members in the Joust and End Zone Obstacle Course.

Other activities included music, Family fun photos, stories with Mother Goose, and SKIESUnlimited demonstrations. The music was provided by Miss Anna, who sang in all the rooms and also did a sing-a-long at lunch, Yahnke said.

"The donated door prizes were all wonderful, and it was amazing to see the excited looks on children's faces when they came to claim a prize," Yahnke said. "Those happy smiles are what the day was all about."

The event supported the Army Family Covenant by bringing youth and their Family members together, and supported the Army Community Covenant by bringing commercial businesses together to enjoy the event with members of the Fort McCoy community, she said. Local sponsors included EconoLodge, CDW-G, McDonald's, Reinhart FoodService, Marcus Cinema, Pizza Hut, River City Ready Mix and FritoLay. No federal endorsement is implied.

Planning is under way for next year's event. For more information about CYS Services or Family and MWR activities/events, visit the Fort McCoy Family and MWR website at http://www.mccoymwr.com, or call the Family and MWR Event Line at 608-388-7400 or 1-877-864-4969.
