FORT IRWIN, Calif.(Sept. 27,2010)-The 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment's Horse Detachment will compete in the National Cavalry Competition at historic Fort Concho in San Angelo, Texas, Sept. 29-Oct. 2.
The competition, sponsored by the U.S. Cavalry Association, is designed to promote good horsemanship and to provide an opportunity for re-enactors, active and reserve military mounted color guards, and mounted police officers to compete and improve their riding skills.
In last year's competition, two Blackhorse Soldiers earned first and second place in the Authenticity category for the Spanish-American War era. The detachment received the General Casimir Pulaski Award for Outstanding Military Unit.
The 11th ACR's Horse Detachment performs at official ceremonies, unofficial functions and regional community events. The detachment serves as a living and historically accurate depiction of the mounted Cavalry Soldier and preserves the Regiment's heritage in order to provide a regional representation of the 11th ACR, Fort Irwin and the U.S. Army to support community relations, Army recruiting and community outreach objectives.
