• Soldiers of C Company, 1st Battalion, 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) were greeted as they arrived at Joint Base Andrews, Md., upon returning from a 12-month deployment to Taji, Iraq, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Saturday, Aug. 28.  Later, at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, Va., family and friends greeted the Soldiers. Maj. Gen. Karl Horst, commander, Joint Force Headquarters- National Capital Region and The U.S. Army Military District of Washington, praised the Soldiers efforts while deployed and formally welcomed them all back home.

The 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, traditionally known as The Old Guard, is the oldest active-duty infantry unit in the Army, serving our nation since 1784. The Old Guard is a tactical infantry regiment and the Army's official ceremonial unit and escort to the president. The Old Guard is also trained to provide security for Washington, D.C., in time of national emergency or civil disturbance.
