TAMPA, Fla. - The United States Army's premiere information technology/cyberspace operations showcase, LandWarNet 2010, kicked off Tuesday in Tampa, Fla., with an address from the military's top cyber commander, Gen. Keith B. Alexander, director, National Security Agency; chief, Central Security Service; and commander, U.S. Cyber Command.
Alexander set the tone of the conference when he said that cyberspace is now a domain alongside air, land, sea, and space. Along with stating the importance of cyberspace as a new dimension of the nation's combat power, the general stressed the importance of securing this new domain by leveraging technical dominance and building partnerships with the Department of Defense, the Intelligence community, the Department of Homeland Security, our allies, and industry.
"We are the generation that started the Internet, and we are the ones that need to secure it," Alexander said.
LandWarNet 2010 is a dual-sponsored conference made possible through the joint effort of the Army Chief Information Officer/G-6 and the International Headquarters of the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association. More than 8,500 government, industry and commercial and military exhibitors registered for this year's conference.
This year's LandWarNet theme, "Providing Global Cyber Dominance to Joint/Combined Commanders," is aimed at ensuring the cyber community if fully prepared to operate in today's cyber environment, said Lt. Gen. Jeffrey A. Sorenson, Army CIO/G-6.
"Throughout the conference, we will delve into a variety of associated critical topics, such as network transformation and integrating future network systems, information assurance, enabling joint expeditionary operations and strengthening cyberspace operations," Sorenson said.
This year's conference focuses on the latest technologies and concepts for communications, electronics and information management providing a venue for highlighting both national, regional, and international security and commercial development of technological issues.
Scheduled to speak at this year's conference, in addition to Alexander, are: Gen. Peter Chiarelli, vice chief of staff, Army; Gen. Martin Dempsey, commander, U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, and Louis Gerstner, former chief executive officer for IBM.
The conference, which has more than 300 commercial and military exhibits, is scheduled to run through Thursday. The conference is scheduled to end with an awards ceremony featuring awards for "Apps for the Army" winners, the Network Enterprise Center awards, the Network Operations and Security Center awards, and 9th Signal Command (Army) Noncommissioned Officer, Soldier, and Civilian of the Year recognition.
