J/G-8 hosts Inaugural Resource Management Conference

The J/G-8 sponsored a Resource Management Conference on July 29, 2010 at the Ft. Myer Officers Club. Opening remarks were given to over 30 civilian and military participants by Col. Carlen Chestang, Jr., chief of staff, Joint Force Headquarters National Capital Region and The U.S. Army Military District of Washington. Chestang stated to attendees, "what you do on a daily basis is important to commanders. You serve as the stewards of the nation's resources."
Cheryl Andres, deputy J/G-8, Joint Force Headquarters National Capital Region and The U. S. Army Military District of Washington said, "the conference was designed not only for civilian employees in the resource management field but also civilian employees that interact on a regular basis with the resource management division. It was also designed for military members who work with or supervise civilians. We hope this conference will provide professional development, inform employees about training opportunities and also provide an atmosphere where people will be able to network and share ideas."
Morning speakers were Steve Wilberger, deputy commandant/dean of operations, Army Management Staff College, Ft. Belvoir, Va. who addressed conference participants on the Civilian Education System, and Ruth Ann Gurr, deputy, Civilian Training and Leader Development Division, Department of the Army, G-3/7 Training Directorate, who spoke on Army Civilian Training and Leader Development. Wilberger noted the purpose for training is to "educate and prepare the Army civilian corps and military members for leadership and management responsibilities throughout the Army. Our goal is to prepare and train people to take on leadership positions."
Afternoon speakers were Terry L. Placek, the comptroller proponency program manager and chief, Comptroller Proponency Office, who talked about Army Comptroller Career Management, and Claudia M. Carr, associate director for Certification at the American Society of Military Comptrollers, who addressed Certified Defense Financial Manager Certification.
Participants had the opportunity to ask questions during the question and answer session after each presentation and also talk with presenters one-on-one. Willie Gaddis, director of the J/G8, stated "a trained workforce makes the Army better. No matter what field you are in, professional development is the key to a good organization."
"We plan for this conference to be an annual event," said Andres.
