ROCK ISLAND, Ill.- Six Soldiers from Army Sustainment Command competed June 14-18 to earn the title of ASC Best Warrior.

Sgt. John Ferguson, a security specialist with the ASC's Headquarters and Headquarters Company, earned top honors in the week-long competition of mental and physical challenges.

"The biggest challenge during the competition was maintaining all the knowledge needed to perform all of the tasks while in a sleep-deprived state," Ferguson said. "Second, were all of the physical demands that were required to complete all tasks to standard."

Each Soldier was assigned a sponsor to encourage them to keep going.

"Having a sponsor was an enormous benefit," Ferguson said. "Our sponsors not only provided moral support and motivation for us, but they made sure we had everything we needed when we needed it. They went above and beyond."

Some of the events that Soldiers competed in were: M4 weapons qualification and reflexive firing, warrior tasks and battle drill situational training exercise, land navigating, 12-mile road march and an appearance before a board of senior NCOs.

Ferguson said that winning was not only a great personal achievement, but it gave him a sense of honor and pride to be able to represent the Army Sustainment Command during the Army Materiel Command competition and for the rest of the year.

Ferguson is competing in the AMC Best Warrior competition, which concludes July 23.

Ferguson enlisted in the Wyoming National Guard as an infantryman in May 2006. In April 2008, he enlisted in the active-duty Army under the Special Forces Recruit Program. He attended airborne school at Fort Benning, Ga. and the Special Forces assessment selection program at Fort Bragg, N.C. He was assigned to Company C, 38th Long Range Surveillance (LRS) at Fort Lewis, Wash., before being assigned to ASC's G2 Physical Security section.
