Warriors dominate EUSA swimming championship

CASEY GARRISON, South Korea - Warrior Country swimmers delivered a dominating performance claiming 13 of the 20 first place awards during the Eighth U.S. Army Swimming Championship July 10 at Hanson Field House here.

Patrick Franzen from the 61st Maintenance Company at Camp Stanley led the way for the Warrior Country contingent winning gold in the men's seniors (33 years and over) 100-meter freestyle, 50-meter breaststroke, 100-meter breaststroke and 50-meter butterfly events. He also received two silvers from the men's division/mixed division 200-meter medley relay and 200-meter freestyle relay team events.

Daniel English from D Co., 1-72nd Artillery, claimed first place honors twice in the men's junior (32 years and under) category of the 50-meter freestyle and 50-meter butterfly events.

Jillian Rock of A Co., 302nd Brigade Support Battalion, took top honors with a time of 42:63 in the women's 50-meter freestyle event. Other individual first place medal winners from Warrior Country were Vincent Britt, C Btry., 6-37th Field Artillery, men's junior 50-meter backstroke; Shea Grossman, C Btry., 6-37th Field Artillery, men's junior 100-meter backstroke; Andrew Mullen, C Btry., 6-37th Field Artillery, men's junior 100-meter butterfly and Spencer Underwood, C Btry., 6-37th Field Artillery, men's junior 200-meter individual medley.

Christopher Lee, A Co., 532nd Military Intelligence Bn. at Yongsan Garrison, competing in the men's junior category tied Franzen with four individual first place awards. Lee finished first in the 100-meter freestyle in 1:09:86; the 200-meter freestyle in 2:55:84; 50-meter breaststroke in 36:85 and the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:24:25.

Camp Henry's Jason Hethcoat from the 517th Movement Control Team, who competed in the men's senior category, took three individual gold medals in the 50-meter freestyle, 200-meter freestyle and the 50-meter backstroke. Although fast times were recorded for some individual events no records have been kept.

The Charlie Btry., 6-37th Field Artillery team of Spencer Underwood, Brandon Sonnenburg, Charles Shuman and Britt claimed gold in the men's division/mixed division 200-meter freestyle relay in 2:07:00.

Another Charlie Battery team consisting of Sonnenburg, Underwood, Aaron Leadingfox and Shuman took top honors in the men's division/mixed division 200-meter medley relay in 2:37:94.
Red Cloud Garrison Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Sports has sponsored EUSA championships numerous times.

"We will continue to hold all of our local swimming events, but we are going to give up some of our swimming events and our triathlon events to other areas on the peninsula," said Randy Behr, garrison FMWR sports director.
