ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. -- The Smithsonian Air and Space Museum located at the National Mall is not large enough to hold the thousands of aviation and space artifacts in the museum's collection.
Near Dulles International Airport, west of Washington, D.C. is a complex of three large hangars and a control tower that houses three stories of everything from the earliest flying machines, engines, satellites, and rockets to the Space Shuttle Enterprise.
The facility is the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy National Air and Space Museum in Chantilly, Va., and students attending the U.S. Army's Communication-Electronics Research, Development and Engineering Center's Outreach Summer Camp visited the museum during their one-week session.
Chaperoned by teachers and members of the CERDEC staff, students said they were impressed by the grand scale of the Space Shuttle and the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird, the fastest jet in the world.
The CERDEC summer camps have been held the past 16 years and take place at the Harford Glen Environmental Center. Students who visited the Air and Space Museum are in grades 7 and 8. Their camp curriculum focused on robotics.
Other Maryland camps: June 21-25, 9th and 10th graders focused on Engineering the Future and visited the Army Corp of Engineers on Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md., and from July 12-16, 5th and 6th graders with a Flight and Rocketry curriculum also visit the Air and Space Museum in Chantilly.
