Combatives registration ends July 14

By MCoE Public Affairs News ReleaseJuly 8, 2010

There are five days left to register to participate in the 2010 Maneuver Center of Excellence Modern Army Combatives Tournament, which will take place July 23 at Smith Fitness Center.

Soldiers and teams from across the installation will compete for a spot on the MCoE Team, which will compete at the U.S. Army Championship Combatives Tournament in October. Units are invited to send as many Soldiers on their teams as they wish.

"Combatives competitions are an important element of Modern Army Combatives training," said CPT Aaron Doutt, commander, D Company, 2nd Battalion, 29th Infantry Regiment. "Any time you put hands on a person on the battlefield, enemy or civilian, you're engaged in combatives. "

Competitions help to not only instill the Warrior Ethos, but to practice techniques against a fully resistant opponent, Doutt said. "The Army has always done a great job at teaching Soldiers to engage the enemy at long ranges with their assigned weapon," he said. "Combatives teaches Soldiers to dominate the closest range of combat. "

Soldiers will compete in one of eight weight classes including bantamweight, males up to 110 pounds and females up to 120 pounds; flyweight, males up to 125 pounds and females up to 136 pounds; lightweight, males up to 140 pounds and females up to 153 pounds; welterweight, males up to 155 pounds and females up to 169 pounds; middleweight, males up to 170 pounds and females up to 185 pounds; cruiserweight, males up to 185 pounds and females up to 198 pounds; light heavyweight, males up to 205 pounds and females up to 227 pounds; and heavyweight, males 206 pounds and up and females 228 pounds and up.

July 14 is the deadline for registration forms to be turned in to the Briant Wells Fieldhouse. For more information, call 706-545-2811, e-mail BENN.229INREGT.CBTCS@conus.army.mil or visit https://www.benning.army.mil/combatives/index.htm.
