SACRAMENTO, Calif. (June 25, 2010) - Sacramento District Commander Col. Tom Chapman joined California's Central Valley Flood Protection Board President Ben Carter and San Joaquin Area Flood Control Agency Executive Director Jim Giottonini to sign the Federal Cost Share Agreement for the Lower San Joaquin River Feasibility Study during a CVFPB meeting June 25.

"This is a significant milestone and we look forward to moving on to the next step in the project," Chapman said at the signing.

While the Corps of Engineers and SJAFCA signed an initial cost-share agreement in February to begin the study, this agreement brings the state of California on as another sponsor and will help provide additional funding and resources to complete the study.

The Lower San Joaquin River Feasibility Study is a multi-year, $10 million study to help determine needed improvements for future flood protection systems covering nearly 140 miles of levees. Through the improvements, the partnership aims to reach or exceed 200-year level of flood protection for the region.
