Whitewater rafting trips set for summer

If you are looking for an adventure, Outdoor Recreation will host three whitewater rafting trips down the Ocoee River in Tennessee.

The trips, open to military ID cardholders and children ages 12 and older, are scheduled for July 17-18, Aug. 14-15 and Sept. 10-11. The cost is $105 per person and includes roundtrip bus transportation, a six-hour guided rafting trip totaling about 8.5 miles, one lunch and a night's stay at a bunkhouse.

The course consists of Class III-IV rapids on the upper and middle part of the river. The upper part of the river was used during the 1996 Olympic slalom competition.

Brittany Beadle, Outdoor Recreation specialist, said she loves rafting, but most of all, she loves the course at Ocoee.

"Whitewater rafting gets my adrenaline pumping," said Beadle, who has rafted for five years. "And the Ocoee is fun because the rapids are one right after another. It's action-packed."

Beadle said those who are new to whitewater rafting shouldn't feel hesitant about going on the trip. There will be guides to teach beginners everything they need to know about the sport.

A maximum of 24 participants are allowed on each trip. The deadline to register for the first trip is July 6. The group will leave Outdoor Recreation at 1 p.m. July 17 and will return to Fort Benning at 7 p.m. July 18.
