Funeral Services for New York Army National Guard Officer 1st Lt. Joseph Theinert
SHELTER ISLAND,NY--The New York Military Forces Honor Guard carries t he flag-covered casket of New York Army National Guard 1st Lt. Joseph Theinert towards the hearse following a funeral mass held at the Sheleter Island Central School on Friday, Feb 11. Theinert was serving on active duty with the Army's 10th Mountain Division in Afghanistan when he was killed in action by an Improvised Explosive Device on June 4th. He was assigned to Troop B, 1st Squadron 71st Cavalry and was age 24 at the time of his death. Brigadier General Patrick Murphy, The Adjutant General of New York and State Command Sergeant Major Robert Van Pelt were among other members of the New York Army National Guard and other services who attended the funeral. More than 2,000 people attended an outdoor funeral mass. Theinert was the first service member from the community to be killed in action since World War II.
