Chaves named USARPAC Deputy CG for Guard

FORT SHAFTER, Hawaii-Brig. Gen. Joseph J. Chaves became the U.S. Army, Pacific Deputy Commanding General , Army National Guard effective June 1. Chaves will pin on his second star June 6.

U.S. Army, Pacific Chief of Staff, Col. A. Thomas Ball announced the Chaves promotion early Tuesday morning.

Chaves, who served the Hawaii Army National Guard as its Assistant Adjutant General since May 11, 2009, enlisted in the Guard Aug. 2, 1970. He earned his commission as a second lieutenant from the Hawaii Military Academy Aug. 17, 1973. Since then, he has held a variety of command and staff positions within the HIANG. He was activated for federal service on Aug, 15, 2004 and served as the Commander of the 29th Brigade Combat Team in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom 2004-2006. Upon his return from Iraq, he led the transformation of the 29th Separate Infantry Brigade into the newly configured 29th Infantry Brigade Combat Team.
