FORT POLK, La. -- Editor's note: This story was written by a Child, Youth and School Services HIRED! Program participant working with Guardian staff.

Preschool is a great time to start the learning process. Kids get to play, meet new friends and learn colors, shapes and numbers. As the school year comes to a close, Fort Polk's Child Development Center, bldg 701, hosted its part day preschool graduation ceremony May 19 to hand out achievement certificates to the children for their hard work before moving on to another year of knowledge and joy.

Excitement and pride seemed to radiate from children and parents as the ceremony began. Families were treated to entertainment as the kids sang three songs: the "Hello Song," the "Alligator Song" and the "ABC Song." They also seemed thrilled to be wearing caps and gowns.

Many of the students had plenty to say about the past year and graduating. Joshua Downard, 4, said his favorite thing about graduation was singing the "Hello Song." Two little girls, Anelina Pinnock, 3, and Brooke Horning, 3, said their favorite thing about graduation was the "Alligator Song" because the words were repeated and they got to jump around.

Having fun while learning is what these kids do. "One of my favorite things to do this year was ride the bikes outside," said Kevin Munoz, 5.

The graduates said they learned to write numbers and letters and how to share. "One of the things I learned this year was how to be nice," said Horning.

After the graduation ceremony was complete, the kids went back to their classrooms to change, wait for parents and head to the cafeteria to celebrate with chips, bananas and cake.
