PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. - Ord Military Community Thrift Shop scholarship awards were presented May 18 to six students from local military families who will pursue college-level studies this fall.

Scholarship recipients were Mia Paul Carius, Christopher L. Carpenter, Kevin Johnson, Armand E. Kincade, Lachelle Ashton Mijare and Teresa Quinn.

Presidio of Monterey Garrison Commander Darcy A. Brewer and Presidio Command Sgt. Maj. Olga Martinez officiated at an informal presentation ceremony held at the Thrift Shop.

The scholarship awards are funded by thrift shop proceeds and given annually, said Thrift Shop Manager Carolyn Pryor. Proceeds earmarked for this year's scholarship awards was $5,000. Recipients are chosen for academic accomplishment and financial need.

Pryor said the Thrift Shop has raised about $200,000 for scholarships over the past 25 years.

The shop was once the Fort Ord Thrift Shop and has been serving the military community for more than 50 years. It is located on Lightfighter Road near the Highway 1 main entrance to Ord Military Community. Business hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday and Fridays. The shop accepts consignments from military community members. Bargain hunters from outside the military community are welcome to visit the store and make purchases.
