The Reverse Sprint Triathlon is back. The annual event, which includes a 5K run, 20K bike ride and a 550-meter swim, is set for June 6, beginning at the Family Entertainment Center on Eckel Street.

"The Reverse Sprint Triathlon is challenging," said Kelly Pulliam, race director. "You can go out and run all of these events separately on any given day, but when you put them together, it's more difficult. The most challenging part of it is that it's nonstop. You have to be able to have stamina and determination to finish the race."

Competitors will begin the run on Eckel Street and loop around toward Dixie Road, followed by a bike ride down Sightseeing Road and will finish the race swimming in Carey Pool.

The course hasn't changed since last year, but the day of the event has. The event is usually on a Saturday, but this year it will be on a Sunday because of scheduling conflicts, Pulliam said. With the day change, she hopes there won't be a smaller turnout.

In 2009, 180 competitors participated in the event. Pulliam is expecting that many and maybe a little more.

The triathlon is one of the biggest events of the year for the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation sports division, Pulliam said.

There will be six individual divisions and four team categories. The top three in each individual and two-and three-person teams will get medals. The top overall male and female will get trophies and prizes.

The cost is $40 per individual and $60 per team, if pre-registered. The cost increases $10 if paid on the day of the event. Preregister at Smith Fitness Center through 4 p.m. June 1. Pre-packet pickup is from 1 to 4 p.m. June 5 at the Family Entertainment Center parking lot. Late registration is from 6:30 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. All participants must attend a safety briefing at 7:45 a.m.

The awards ceremony will be at El Zapata following the race. The event is open to the public and spectators are welcome.
