Fort Belvoir, Va., May 17, 2010 - The U.S. Army announced today that CSM Gary J. Fowler has been selected to serve as the next Provost Sergeant Major of the Army.

Fowler, a seasoned military police officer with more than 26 years of service, is currently the Senior Enlisted Leader of the Joint Detention Group for the Joint Task Force at the U.S. Naval Base, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He will replace CSM Freddie L. Brock who will be retiring this summer after 28 years of service.

"CSM Brock has made countless contributions to this Nation and to our Army during his outstanding career and for that we send a sincere thank you for a job extremely well done," said Brig. Gen. Colleen McGuire, Provost Marshal General of the Army and CID Commanding General.

"I was surprised to get the news," said Fowler. "I'm thankful to have been selected and am being given this great opportunity to assist the PMG as she steers the Military Police Corps forward. The Army is constantly transitioning at a rapid rate ... I look forward to the challenge of keeping the MP Corps out in front in combat, while continuing to provide high-quality police services to our Soldiers and our installations."

"CSM Fowler has a very impressive record as a Soldier, a leader and an MP," said Brig. Gen. McGuire. "He has an extensive background in Military Police Operations from team leader to Command Sergeant Major, both on and off the battlefield. I have no doubt his knowledge and sage advice will pay huge dividends to all of us in the Military Police profession for many years to come."

As part of the PMG's special staff, Fowler will be the senior enlisted advisor charged with carrying out Military Police policies and standards, operations and the performance, training and conduct of enlisted personnel.

Fowler joined the Army in 1984 as an MP and his first assignment was at Fort Riley, Kansas. Since then, he has served in a number of capacities stateside and overseas including squad leader, operations NCO, detachment sergeant, first sergeant and operations SGM.

Fowler's military awards and decorations include: the Bronze Star Medal (2 Oak Leaf Clusters), the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (4 Oak Leaf Clusters), the Army Commendation Medal (6 Oak Leaf Clusters), the Army Achievement Medal (4 Oak Leaf Clusters), and the Army Good Conduct Medal (8th Award). CSM Fowler was awarded the Master Parachutist Badge, the Polish Airborne Badge, the Military Police Corps Order of the Marechaussee, the German Marksmanship Badge and the Maj. Gen. Aubrey "Red" Newman Medallion.
