PETERSON AFB, Colo. - Members of the 1st Space Brigade kicked off this year's Military Spouses Appreciation Day in the lobby of U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Forces Strategic Command operation's headquarters in Building 3 on the afternoon of May 7.

Military Spouse Appreciation Day was first celebrated in 1984 when then-President Ronald Reagan proclaimed the observance to honor the contributions of military spouses.

The day is celebrated by the military the Friday before Mother's Day each year to pay tribute to the spouses who play a vital role in the nation's defense.

Lt. Col. Timothy Cassibry, executive officer for the 1st Space Brigade, addressed a gathering of Army Space Soldiers and their spouses by stating how important it is to take this time to let our military spouses know how much we appreciate them for all they do on a daily basis, be it volunteering or just being a spouse of an Army Space Soldier.

In an effort to not leave out the sometimes overlooked male spouses of Soldiers, Kevin Green, spouse of the brigade's Pfc. Sierra Green, was invited to join Cassibry along with event organizer Julia Maldonado, Family Readiness Support Assistant, USASMDC/ARSTRAT, to cut the ceremonial cake.

Spouses were treated to refreshments and were presented with a scroll of an appropriate poem marking the occasion as well as receiving a small bag of goodies. The brigade's commander, Col. Jeffery Farnsworth, also stopped by to personally thank each spouse for their support.
