GRAFENWOEHR, Germany - The U.S. Army Garrison Grafenwoehr conducted an Army Superior Unit Award presentation ceremony today to recognize its Soldiers, Department of the Army civilian and local national employees for their efforts in earning the award.

The U.S. Army Garrison Grafenwoehr is the first European installation to earn the award, which recognizes "outstanding meritorious service of a unit during peacetime (defined as any period during which wartime or combat awards are not authorized in the geographical area in which the mission was executed) of a difficult and challenging mission under extraordinary circumstances."

The garrison received the award based on its "support of the Army's Efficient Basing-Grafenwoehr initiatives and the restationing, deployment and reintegration of more than 11,000 Soldiers and providing family support to more than 22,000 family members."

The garrison's award also cited the day-to-day support to all tenant units, civilians and training support to the more than 13,000 transient training Soldiers.

"We have seen tremendous growth the past few years. Completing construction and providing services to meet the needs of our growing population were challenges our Soldiers and civilians met," said Col. Nils C. Sorenson, U.S. Army Garrison Grafenwoehr commander.

The garrison's Soldiers, who received military ribbons, and more than 500 employees, who received pins that replicate the military ribbon, braved a rainy afternoon to take part in the presentation.

"What is great about this is that it can be worn by all employees - and that is what this all about - our employees. But not all our employees could be here because we have services that must be maintained," Sorenson said.

Employees who did not receive their Army Superior Unit Award pins today will receive them from their supervisor.
