FORT RUCKER, Ala. -- Air Force Staff Sgt. Keayana Minus didn't decide to become an avid volunteer for the recognition, so when she was announced as the winner of the 2010 American Legion Spirit of Service Award, it came as a surprise.

"I never thought I'd be chosen for something like this," the Fort Rucker 23rd Flying Training Squadron member said. "But, of course, I didn't do it for the award. I just wanted to help other people."

The American Legion Spirit of Service Award is sponsored by the National Headquarters of the American Legion and is presented annually to armed forces members for outstanding volunteer service performed off duty in local communities.

Minus contributed time to Habitat for Humanity, local senior citizen organizations and church-sponsored assistance programs.

"It's a blessing to extend services to those who are less fortunate," Minus said. "I would encourage anyone who can to volunteer somewhere. It's a very rewarding experience."

Her commander, Lt. Col. Brett Hauenstein, nominated her for the Spirit of Service award because "she demonstrates service before self."

According to Hauenstein, her volunteer work as the lead for the squadron's Combined Federal Campaign exceeded the unit goal by 216 percent, setting a new record. Minus further volunteered to lead the squadron's Air Force Association Fund drive, which resulted in more than $2,500.

"She exemplifies the core values of the Air Force every day," he said. "It's outstanding that she won."

Several other members of the 23rd Flying Training Squadron echoed Hauenstein's praise of her win.

"She is a fantastic volunteer and puts her heart and soul into it, and the unit is very proud of her," Lt. Col. John Bernhart, operations officer, said.

"She cares just as much about helping others as she cares about her duties," Minus' immediate supervisor, Tech Sgt. Teri Murray said. "She's a team player and very giving. It's so great that she won."

Minus said she plans to continue volunteering whenever and wherever she can, but she does have a couple of places in mind.

"I've put in an application to work with the House of Ruth (women's shelter)," she said. "I'm not sure if I'll get to or not, but I'm planning to continue volunteering with my church and other groups as well."
