Fort Gordon, Ga. -- As her husbandAca,!a,,cs tenure as the ArmyAca,!a,,cs Chief of Signal nears completion, Beth Foley is reflective of her time as an active-duty nurse and spouse.

"If I could have one do-over, I would have had spouses here more frequently. These spouses just do so much," said Foley, wife of Brig. Gen. Jeffrey Foley, Fort Gordon's commanding general and Chief of Signal, who opened up her home Monday to military spouses at the kickoff event for Military Spouse Appreciation Week.

A light rain didn't deter guests who stayed dry under the deck and tents of Quarters 1.

Kris Arjoon was probably like most spouses. "I wanted to see the general's house," said Arjoon, whose husband, Warrant Officer Ian Arjoon attends school here. "This is exciting."

There was no set agenda for the drop-in event.

"We just wanted to thank them for all they do, meet some new faces and let them embrace each other," said Foley.

Each spouse received a scroll about the importance of the military spouse. And it wasn't just wives who attended Monday's event. Mark Napper, the husband of Brig. Gen. Jennifer Napper, commander of the 7th Signal Command (Theater), also attended.

This is the second year Fort Gordon has opted for a week-long celebration for military spouses, according to Shawn Williams at Army Community Service. The Friday before Mother's Day has been set aside as Military Spouse Appreciation Day since the 1980s, she said.

Williams said many events were held during the week including free events for military spouses at Gordon Lanes, Gordon Lakes Golf Club and Hilltop Riding Stables. Plus there was a book-signing at the library and a car care event. The events will cap off today with a Military Spouse Expo from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Army Reserve Center, with facials, massages, a complimentary lunch and a variety of giveaways for spouses.
