FORT HUACHUCA, Ariz. -- Members of the Fort Huachuca community gathered Saturday to celebrate the Month of the Military Child. The event was held, in conjunction with the grand opening of the new Child Development Center.
Throughout the month of April, military children are honored and recognized for the unique challenges and sacrifices they make.
"I wish I could give every child a medal for what they do," said Col. Timothy Faulkner, Fort Huachuca Garrison commander, while speaking to guests prior to cutting the ribbon on the new center.
Once the ribbon was cut, guests toured the new $5million state-of-the-art structure.
"The facility is an extension of the New Beginnings Child Development Center," said Maria Ojeda-Roddey, assistant director and manager on site.
The center houses programs such as Army Strong Beginnings pre-kindergarten and Stepping Stones to Strong Beginnings, which is a toddler program.
Ojeda-Roddey says the School of Knowledge, Inspiration, Exploration and Skills program has expanded to offer more activities such as gymnastics, dance, yoga and zumba. All classes at the facility are grouped by ages.
"The center is for the whole community. The future possibilities are endless. If you come up with an idea you'd like to have at the center it's certainly a possibility," Ojeda-Roddey explained.
According to Christine Thorps, director of Child Development Center, the new Child Development Center was funded through the Army Family Covenant.
"We're just happy to bring more programs to the community," she said.
Military children spending the day at the new facility and celebrating Month of the Military Child were entertained with activities for the entire family.
There were games, entertainment, guest speakers, giveaways, information booths, free food and more at the day-long celebration.
