FORT RUCKER, Ala. -- To help hunters enjoy the sport of turkey hunting, Fort Rucker's annual Gobbler Classic is April 9.

The event is open to the public from 5 to 10 a.m. Cost to participate is $10 and hunters should register at Outdoor Recreation, Bldg. 24236, located at Lake Tholocco's West Beach Marina.

Hosted by Outdoor Recreation Division, hunters have a chance to compete for bragging rights as the post's winner of the Gobbler Classic until next turkey season.

The Gobbler Classic is held one Friday during turkey hunting season for Soldiers, to help boost morale and give them a chance to relax a half-day out of their busy work schedules, and for civilians, according to John Clancy, Outdoor Recreation Program Manger.

The hunt gives "a friendly competition between Soldiers along with providing camaraderie among hunters," he said.

Clancy encouraged Soldiers and civilians to sign up for the annual hunt and noted he looks forward to seeing a great turnout.

Trophies are awarded to the top three winners along with door prizes drawings.

Avid outdoorsman, Sam Lindsey, a Department of the Army civilian with the Directorate of Public Works, participates in many of the hunting and fishing opportunities Outdoor Recreation offers throughout the year.

"ODR has a wide variety of outdoor activities - something for the Family to participate in, no matter what season it is," he said.

In order to hunt on Fort Rucker, patrons must have Alabama state hunting licenses and must complete hunter education courses. For a list of upcoming hunter education courses, visit www.outdooralabama.com.
