JOINT BASE BALAD, Iraq - The 80th Ordnance Battalion honored nearly 100 Soldiers of the 910th Quartermaster Company during their end of tour awards ceremony Feb. 22 at Joint Base Balad, Iraq.
The ceremony specifically recognized the Soldiers' significant contributions in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Six Bronze Star Medals, one Meritorious Service Medal, 48 Army Commendation Medals and 43 Army Achievement Medals were awarded by the 80th Ordnance Battalion commander Lt. Col. Christopher Mohan, from Carthage, N.C., and the 80th Ordnance Battalion senior noncommissioned officer Command Sgt. Maj. Kenneth Tincknell, from Huntsville, Ala.
The 910th Quartermaster Company mobilized in March 2009 as a unique modular Army Reserve unit comprised of warehouse supply specialists, petroleum supply specialists and water purification specialists. The unit is comprised of Soldiers from three geographically dispersed quartermaster company units in Tupelo, Miss., Ardmore, Okla., and Greensburg, Pa., said 1st Lt. Candace Daunis, the company's executive officer.
During Operation Iraqi Freedom 2009-2010, the 910th Quartermaster Company executed offensive logistics operations in support of coalition forces operating in the Iraqi theater, Daunis said.
Specifically, the 910th Quartermaster Company managed the forward redistribution point, multi-class warehouse, Class IX aviation warehouse, central issuing facility, and transportation motor pool, Daunis said.
The Soldiers of the 910th Quartermaster Company coordinated the closing of the Forward Redistribution Point and were instrumental in the successful execution of the Joint Base Balad amnesty day, Daunis explained.
Amnesty day proved so successful that the Joint Base Balad amnesty yard was born, she said.
The Amnesty yard currently supports the turn-in of millions of dollars of excess serviceable equipment from mobile redistribution teams sent throughout Iraq, significantly contributing to theater drawdown efforts, Daunis said.
"We came together as members from three different units. We leaned on each other and formed a team, which led to us having a successful deployment," said 1st Lt. Sarah Weber, the commander of the 910th Quartermaster Co. and Pittsburgh native. "I am proud of what we accomplished."
The awards ceremony marked the end of a yearlong mobilization and successful deployment for the Soldiers of the 910th Quartermaster Co.
"I hope that you remember the awards from this tour, but more importantly, I hope that you remember the Soldiers standing on your left and on your right because it is those Soldiers that made your unit and your deployment successful," Mohan said.
