Soldier musicians ready for solo spotlight

The Army Ground Forces Band's "Sound the Trumpets" concert will feature the Army Herald Trumpets, the official fanfare ensemble for the president of the United States, at the Ferst Center for the Arts at Georgia Tech Saturday at 8 p.m.

The concert will also showcase two of the band's Soldier-musicians, Staff Sgt. Byron Bartosh and Spc. Kailin Eskander, who will perform trumpet and English horn solos in Aaron Copland's "Quiet City."

"I'm excited about playing this piece because Copland wrote it in a way that really allows the performers to make a musical connection with each other and - more importantly - the audience," said Bartosh, a graduate of Indiana University's Jacob School of Music who joined the Army in 2008 after serving several years in the Marine Corps.

"'Quiet City' was originally written to accompany a play by the same name, and we want to communicate the human drama it represents through the music," added Eskander, a music performance graduate of Saint Olaf College (in Minnesota) who also plays the oboe.

"It really is fun to act things out through melody and music making." Maj. Domingos Robinson, AGFB's commander and conductor, noted, "This music is typical Copland. He is able to be both beautiful and haunting, creating an American sound that is at once both his and ours. When I thought of the demands of this music, I knew I had the right players to pull it off in Bartosh and Eskander."

As for the entire evening's performance, "Sound the Trumpets" will offer an evening of music for the entire Family, including "Olympic Fanfare and Theme" and "Liberty Fanfare" by John Williams and selections from Leonard Bernstein's "West Side Story." "Sound the Trumpets" is a free, general admission concert. No tickets are required.
