DETROIT ARSENAL, Mich. Aca,!" Four zero emission, Low Speed Electric Vehicles are now supplementing and, in some cases, replacing conventional gasoline-fueled cars and trucks used by U.S. Army Garrison Detroit Arsenal organizations.

Overall, the new General Services Administration vehicle fleet additions reflect Installation Management CommandAca,!a,,cs commitment to promoting environmental stewardship.

Aca,!A"We are thrilled to be part of the Aca,!EoeGo GreenAca,!a,,c initiative,Aca,!A? said Patrick Adomako-Twum, fleet manager for the Installation Transportation Office. Aca,!A"With an optimized portfolio of LSEVs and conventional vehicles, an installation can effectively reduce its petroleum consumption without a negative effect on mission requirements.Aca,!A?

Similar in appearance to a spruced-up golf cart, the vehicles come in two different styles: a two-passenger cargo truck and a four-passenger sedan. They come equipped with the same safety amenities as conventional automobiles Aca,!" headlights, turn signals, a horn, wipers, and reverse warning indicators Aca,!" but also provide such comforts as a heater, a cooling fan and even cup holders.

Energy is supplied from eight maintenance-free batteries, which utilize the same amperage as most kitchen appliances, and a full charge lasts up to eight hours depending on vehicle usage.

The LSEVs travel at a maximum speed of 25 miles per hour. Although they are currently not approved for operation on federal highways, but Adomako-Twum remains optimistic.

Aca,!A"As we look to the future, I am confident that electric vehicles will become faster and more efficient,Aca,!A? said Adomako-Twum. Aca,!A"Plans for the new parking structure include the installation of charging stations in order to facilitate the anticipated efforts of employees in helping to reduce our dependency on fossil fuel consumption.Aca,!A?

Aca,!A"These vehicles will make my time more efficient,Aca,!A? states Cheryl Neades of the DPW environmental division. Aca,!A"We walk a lot on the installation doing multiple inspections, which is good for us physically, but it just takes too much time out of our day.Aca,!A?

Along with IMCOM, the USAG Detroit Arsenal remains actively engaged in decreasing fossil fuel emissions, promoting a clean environment and reducing dependency on petroleum consumption. Incorporating LSEVs, said garrison officals, as an alternative means of transportation is just one of the ways the garrison is working to achieve their Aca,!EoeGo GreenAca,!a,,c goals.
