FORT BRAGG, N.C. - The Warrior Transition Battalion barracks are being renovated here to provide American Disability Association compliant rooms for wounded, ill and injured Soldiers. The $6.9 million project is scheduled for completion April 6.

The building, also known as the old nurses' quarters, is located on the corner of Normandy Drive and the All-American Expressway. To perform the necessary renovations, the building was stripped to its frame and rebuilt from the ground up.

"The project provides 44 rooms that have enhancements that support Soldier independence," said Maj. Chris Blais, executive officer, WTB.

He added that the rooms will enable Soldiers with mobility restrictions the ability to care for themselves. Some of the rooms will also be designed for full wheelchair access.

Similar to the design of the other new barracks being constructed on post, the rooms will be suites housing two Soldiers with a shared common area and kitchenette. Each Soldier will have his or her own private bedroom.

The WTB is working with the garrison to ensure the space is used for Soldiers who need it most. There are other Soldiers not assigned to the WTB pending medical evaluation boards or with mobility restrictions. Blais said prioritizing who needs ADA rooms is currently being worked.

The Directorate of Public Works said that the project is on schedule and is currently at 88 percent completion.

In addition to the barracks renovation, the WTB is seeing the completion of other projects and is planning for future ones. On Wednesday, the WTB celebrated its new office space in the Soldier Support Center with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

Future plans include building a warrior transition complex across the street from the SSC where the pharmacy is currently located. Blais said $78 million was appropriated for the project in fiscal year 2009.

The project will provide 250 rooms as well as administrative and clinical space for the WTB. The projected completion date is fiscal year 2012.
