U.S. Forces kill 3 violent extremists, capture 1

<b>FORWARD OPERATING BASE MAREZ, Iraq </b>- Soldiers of the 1st Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment, Task Force Marne, killed three violent extremists and injured another about 22 miles south of Mosul, Jan. 30.
From their position at Joint Security Station Ash Shura, the battalion observed four men, who appeared to be planting improvised explosive devices near a major roadway. A U.S. Forces' M2A2 Bradley Fighting Vehicle and three up-armored humvees responded and struck an improvised explosive device en route to the location. No significant damage was caused by the IED. The patrol engaged the men with small arms, killing three and wounding one.
After the wounded individual was detained, Explosives Ordnance Detachment Soldiers from Task Force Troy arrived and confirmed that the men had planted the IED, which consisted of approximately 40 pounds of explosive chemicals in a metal container and detonating wire. Other weapons and evidence were also collected at the scene.
The insurgents' biometric data was collected for future reference, and the wounded insurgent was turned over to Ash Shura Iraqi police for medical treatment and questioning.
First Battalion, 64 Armored Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, from Fort Stewart, Ga., is assigned to Ninawa province.
