The Red Rockets soared to a 48-32 victory against the Jungle Cats in post intramural basketball Tuesday at Smith Fitness Center.

Both teams kept the score close in the first period, tying three times within the first 13 minutes of the game. Tied at 13, the Red Rockets' Anthony Hurndon and James Howie, of E Company, 1st Battalion (Airborne), 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment, scored to give the Red Rockets a 19-13 lead. The Jungle Cats, of FSC 11th Engineer Bn., attempted to close the gap, but trailed 27-19 at halftime.

The Red Rockets' defense held the Jungle Cats to three points with 14 minutes remaining in the second half, while capitalizing on free throws. Leading 44-30 with two minutes remaining, Red Rockets' Terrance Smith and Oitrek Mack added points in the final minute to seal the 48-32 win.

"We did really well," said Lee Dodson, Red Rockets coach. "We did a good job on the full court press and had great teamwork. We tried to run a full court press last game and no one knew what was going on, but we practiced it and we were successful at it (tonight). This is our first win - I'm happy."

Red Rockets guard Hurndon said the team's defense was strong and capitalized on making the Jungle Cats make harder shots.

"Our defense was able to stop the other team from getting easy shots and catching up," he said. "I think they underestimated us. Most teams think we'll lose because we are a small team, (but that's not the case)."

Next up for the Red Rockets is the 192nd Inf. Training Brigade at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Smith Fitness Center. For more intramural basketball scores and standings, see the sports scorebox on C2.
