FORT CARSON, Colo.-The last time a Tyrannosaurus rex walked around the Colorado Springs area looking for his brother was probably about 65 million years ago. But on Dec. 16, a baby T. rex walked the halls of Mountain Side Elementary School and found his there.
Stephen Hershey of Chester County, Pa., is one of the actors with "Walking with Dinosaurs," a live show based on the BBC television series of the same name. He was in Colorado Springs to promote the show, which will be at the World Arena Jan. 21-24. His brother, Sgt. Kelby Hershey, is stationed at Fort Carson with Company D., Special Troops Battalion, 4th Infantry Division. During his appearance at the school, Kelby stopped by to see his brother.
"It is good to see that he has steady work," Kelby said. "He went into acting and has done the theater thing in New York and has done some musicals and off-Broadway shows, but it is so hard to get picked for shows in New York or California."
Kelby said that they always had different interests: Kelby was into sports and history, while Stephen was into the arts. That affected their career choices as Kelby enlised into the Army and his brother pursued an acting career. While talking to friends about what your brother does can be interesting, Stephen's current acting gig has had some very different reactions.
"When we are hanging out, someone will ask what my brother does," said Kelby. "I tell them that he is a T. rex. Then their jaw just drops."
While Stephen is "Baby T. Rex" on the road, he isn't in the show. But he did arrange for his brother to see it when it comes to town.
"I'm really looking forward to seeing it with my friends," Kelby said.
